Community Outreach: Teaching Colorado Youth about Scotland

In February, three members of our Scottish community visited World Compass Academy for their annual Diversity Day.

Kathryn McIver (SASC Highland Herald Editor), Samantha Hurst (SASC Marketing Director), and Alyssa Watkins (professional athlete, Rocky Mountain Scottish Athletes) endeavored to show off Scottish culture and heritage.

This trio of brilliant ladies engaged the students on topics like the legendary Loch Ness Monster, Scottish inventions that changed the world, Scottish-Americans who shaped our history and country, tartan and kilts, Scottish athletics and so much more.

Engaging with our youth, not only helps keep Scottish and Scottish-American history alive within the classroom, but it gives our children an opportunity to broaden their perspectives, learn about possible ancestors and many of our early political leaders. We plant these seeds of knowledge and heritage with the hope one day that these young individuals will carry on the traditions our families have been carrying for generations.

If you have any ideas on how we can continue to engage our youth and increase our community outreach, please email info@coloradoscots.com
